Personal backups for Faculty and Administrators:
Along with virus protection and regular updates, a backup strategy is one of the most important steps one can take to secure the data on their computer. While many individuals at Columbia use external online services (like Mozy) for their personal backup needs, CUIT and FDS recommend an internal Columbia service called Connected Dataprotector. Like Mozy, it is intended to be used for personal backups, and is a service provided at a reasonable cost. Unlike Mozy, Columbia's Dataprotector service allows sensitive internal Columbia information to remain on Columbia-operated servers.
You can find more information about the Connected Dataprotector service, here.
If you would like help in setting up the Dataprotector service (or any backup service) on your desktop or laptop computer, please contact FDS and request an appointment. We can also be reached via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone (212-854-0702)
Backup strategies for departments and laboratories:
While the Connected Dataprotector service is intended for individuals, group working in a shared environment (departmental backups or computer labs) require a different approach. Options include an account with MALTS or installing a dedicated and inexpensive RAID backup server. Please contact FDS and request an appointment to discuss options based on your needs. We can also be reached via email (email@example.com) or phone (212-854-0702).
